Chatgaiya: the language of home
The speech of Chattogram is distinct enough that visitors from elsewhere in Bangladesh often need a moment to tune in.
From public sources
Chatgaiya, or Chittagonian, is the everyday spoken language of the district and of the wider Greater Chittagong region, with an estimated 13 million speakers (2006). Its sounds, vocabulary and grammar differ so much from standard Bangla that the two are not readily understood by each other's speakers, although it is often described as a dialect.
Standard Bangla is used in education, administration and writing, and most people move easily between the two: Chatgaiya at home and in the market, standard Bangla in formal settings. When it is written, it uses the Bengali script.
